altRecently Roselle talked with us at the Ashram Yoga office and kept us spell-bound with a fascinating conversation about pregnancy. If you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are related to someone who is pregnant then we highly recommend Roselle’s Natal Yoga classes on Wednesday mornings.

Did you know that after 20 weeks the baby can hear perfectly well and learns to recognise voices? So when the baby is born it already knows who is who – and responds particularly strongly to the father’s voice.

Knowing this, Roselle teaches ‘vocal toning’ in her classes which has many benefits for the mother and baby – including stimulating a neurological connection between the throat, jaw, pelvis and cervix.

Did you know that your balance needs recalibrating every week of the pregnancy as your belly expands? Fortunately, there are yoga postures that can help with that.

Other postures are given to improve the posture and joints, which are the parts of the body most affected by most affected by hormones during pregnancy. Additional postures are used to balance digestive discomfort (such as over-acidity), strengthen muscles and increase cardiovascular function. There also exercises for concentration and fluid retention.

Classes also include other toning exercises specific to female requirements including the abdomen, perineum and the pelvic floor. These exercises help to bring blood, oxygen and nutrients to these areas.

Pranayama breathing exercises are used to bring emotional stability, increase oxygen in the body and prepare for birthing.

Yoga Nidra guided meditations are also an important part of the class. This helps the mother and baby to bond before the baby is even born! It also helps with ‘sleep debt.’ Roselle says she often has classes with ten sleeping women during Yoga Nidra.

Natal Yoga classes is a place where you can find a sense of community and be around people who are going through the same experiences as you. Often lifelong friendships start in class like this.

Roselle’s has a lot of knowledge and experience with the whole pregnancy process. Her enthusiasm and wisdom is plain for all to see.
