Becoming a qualified yoga teacher is a great way to open the door to opportunity. Yoga teaching gives you the ability to change people’s lives, make new friends and earn an income all at the same time.
Ashram Yoga has trained hundreds of teachers over the years – and many of them have used their qualification to earn money.
Alita’s Story
We talked with Alita about her experience of teaching yoga. She participated in Ashram Yoga’s part-time Level 1 teacher training programme last year.
Alita says that the course totally changed her life by “expanding my knowledge from yoga as a way of exercise to yoga as a way of life”.
The training also opened lots of doors for teaching. When she started the course she intended to teach kids yoga and hadn’t really thought about teaching adults. However, during the course she started teaching a group of friends as part of her training.
She thought it was really cool to be able to show adults how to do yoga. Some of them had never even tried it before and they appreciated the benefits a lot more than kids would. She found it very rewarding being able to make a difference in their lives – and actually seeing them change and improve.
Meeting Interesting People
She says that as a yoga teacher you meet all kinds of interesting, like-minded people – students in classes and courses and workshops. And she says the there are lots of interesting people at Ashram Yoga!
Alita says that most people who come to her yoga classes are usually open minded and looking to try something new for a bit of stress relief and to keep fit.
Current Classes
She is currently teaching four adult classes each week and just started a kids yoga class this month. Two of her classes are at Ashram Yoga in Parnell and the other three are at Pilates studios. She landed these jobs through people she knew – by going to classes there.
Alita says that it takes time for a new class to build up, and her classes have grown over time. She prefers teaching groups rather than private clients – there is more energy in a group class than one-on-one, plus she finds that clients feel more comfortable seeing that most people in the class aren’t as flexible as the teacher might be.
Making Money
Although she doesn’t do it for the money, Alita says you could make a lot of money from teaching yoga if you are marketing minded (much like any business).
“There is lots of opportunity out there to make loads of money off yoga, especially in the specialty areas like yoga for golfers, cyclists, surfers or runners.”
She adds that corporate classes at businesses are popular and there is plenty of opportunity there if the company has the space.
Bio
Alita has a husband and two young children to look after and finds that teaching yoga is flexible enough to fit in around her family commitments. She feels very happy and fortunate about finding a new career at mid-life – doing something that she’s passionate about.
