One Bowl
by Don Gerrard
.
In the 1970s Don Gerrard was overweight. He picked up some books on health and found that they contradicted each other. So he did something remarkable. He decided to throw away the books and eat what his body wanted. He did this by putting any food he liked into a bowl and eating it with his full attention.
He looked at the food. He smelled it. He tasted it. He paid attention to texture and colour and temperature. He listened for his body’s hunger signals and sensations in his stomach. He kept a journal and wrote down his emotional reactions. He observed the whole digestive process throughout the day.
It was an amazing journey of discovery which transformed his life, his body and his attitude to food. He found out what his body really liked, what it craved and what it disagreed with. He learnt what really nourished him. And then he wrote a book about his experience.

A reader at Amazon.com says:
This book is a classic food book. It’s first manifestation was way back in the 70s, a thin volume that nevertheless was packed with wisdom about how to get back in touch with our bodies and our nutritional needs.
Nearly 30 years later its prescriptions, or perhaps I should say “non-prescriptions,” still hold as true as ever. The author tells us, in a warm but informative way, how to read our bodies inner messages about what we need to stay healthy.
The key is eating from one bowl and paying attention in some very unusual ways–at least unusual in today’s culture–to foods that “hum,” for example, and how we can make use of this information for making healthy choices.
I think that one of the greatest contributions this book makes is that it teaches us how to make choices from the inside out–choices that bring us closer to our bodies and closer to ourselves.
